SPARRING TECHNIQUES & DEFENCES
OFFENSIVE
SPARRING TECHNIQUES
(lead)
backfist -(rear) cross -(rear) front kick/ pushing kick (mid sec. or
high) -spinning back kick -land & cover up
jab -cross (or reverse
knifehand) -(rear) turning kick -(jumping) reverse turning kick
“blitz” (hand
attack) -jumping back kick
slide in (lead) mid.
sec. double side kick (2 very fast kicks) -(optional hook kick) -drop
the leg down & “fall” into a “blitz”
slide in
(lead) hook kick -(rechamber) turning kick* -step down into a “blitz”
* or
turning kick -hook kick combination
“double stepping”
(lead) axe kick -”blitz”
jumping
(lead) backfist -reverse punch -land into a “blitz”
slide in (lead) side
kick -(jumping) back kick -land & cover up grabbing opponent
(professional hug) or “blitz”
(rear)
turning kick* -360 ° spin -(same leg) turning kick (jumping)
(can
carry combination on with back kick & “blitz”)
*the
turning kick is to set up the distance for your next kick
(dummy) mid sec.
turning kick* -(rechamber rapidly) -(same leg) high sec. turning kick
-step down into “blitz”
*to drop
opponents guard
double jab
-(rear) reverse knifehand -step through spinning knifehand (lead)*
-cover up or “blitz”
*controlled!
jab* -spinning back
kick -(rechamber quickly -same leg) -hook kick -step down into “blitz”
*to set up
distance
note:
when using jumping
techniques, especially kicks (side, back etc.), jump TOWARDS the
opponent NOT straight up in the air, unless the opponent is so close
that you have to.
DEFENSIVE
SPARRING TECHNIQUES
Defence against hand
attacks
a) Direct /linear
attacks
i.
Block the 1st
couple of hand attacks with (open hand) blocks -slide back, far
enough, so the opponent runs onto a mid sec SIDE KICK -step down and
BLITZ opponent.
(you could possibly
execute a back kick after the side kick, if the distance is correct)
ii.
You could try
and “out punch” the attacker, by blocking the 1st couple of techniques
and then firing a barrage of hand combinations into opponents head/
body
e.g:
jumping blitz/ jab -cross combo’s/ hook -uppercut;s etc.
iii.
With front leg,
step across in front of your rear leg (closing your body up),lifting
hands/ elbows to protect your head, so your back is turned to the
opponent -and deliver a BACK KICK with your rear leg -step down into a
BLITZ
iv.
Similar to the
above but “stance switch” before executing the BACK KICK
b) Defence against a
“blitz”
i.
Slide back and
with lead leg execute FRONT KICK -performed very quickly (a front kick
is preferable to a side kick because it is quicker to execute) -step
down into your own hand BLITZ
When kicking, lean
your head/ body out of opponents reach.
ii.
Step to the
side of the direct attack line & spin your body, and using your hands
(“disguised” as the spinning motion/ winding up of your body) push/
redirect opponent past you as you carry on spinning to drop a REVERSE
TURNING/ AXE KICK (bringing the kick up and then down in a circular
motion onto the back of the opponents head) -step down into a BLITZ
(to the back of opponent)
c) Defence against
spinning hand techniques
i.
REVERSE TURNING
KICK -BLITZ
ii.
Run towards
opponent (away from opponents attack) into BLITZ.
(These are exactly the
same counters for reverse turning kick attacks, but they have to be
performed much quicker and with caution -hand attacks are a lot faster
than kicks).
Defence against front
kicks
Step to the outside of
attack and block the kick across with an (open hand) low section
block, pushing opponent off balance and close in with a hand
combination to opponents head (BLITZ) -running in on top of opponent,
closing them up and causing them to lose balance (keep your hand
attack up until the referee stops the fight).
Defence against
turning kicks
i.
Competitors in
open stance (against rear leg attack);
REVERSE TURNING KICK
counter -step down and close opponent up with 3 or 4 punches to the
head /body
ii.
Competitors in
either open or closed stance;
Slide across to inside
of attack and SIDE KICK (kick /push opponent backwards to set up
distance for next technique) -step down and spin with a BACK KICK to
body followed with a BLITZ
Defence against side
kicks
i.
(Slide back)
AXE KICK over opponents leg onto opponents face/ chest (this can be a
bit risky because it does expose the groin) and bring the kicking leg
over and down to tangle up the opponents kicking leg to prevent more
kicks -land into BLITZ
ii.
With lead hand
block the kick downwards with palm heel (sliding body out of reach of
kick) -with lead leg execute HOOK KICK -TURNING KICK combination -step
down into BLITZ
iii.
As for
defence vs.turning kick No. ii SIDE KICK counter
iv.
Competitors in
closed stance (front leg attack) -spinning on front leg,
counter with BACK KICK -step down into BLITZ
Defence against back
kicks and reverse turning kicks
These can both be
treated very similarly
i.
Step away from
direction of kick and run towards opponent and BLITZ opponent with
head punches
ii.
(Step away from
direction of kick) spinning on lead leg -if competitors are in closed
stance -to execute your own REVERSE TURNING KICK to head -step down
into a BLITZ attack
Defence against axe
kicks
These are very awkward
to defend against
i.
note:
you have to time this very well to pull it off!
Run in towards
opponent with your arm up in a rising block (an X-block would tie your
hands up to much) -this will push the axe kick upwards, and then carry
on running towards them to push them backwards and off balance -then
complete the counter with a HAND PUNCHING combination to opponent (as
he is falling)
ii.
Step away from
the arc of the kick (so that you do not run into the kick as it is
rising up in an arc) and step towards the opponent and BLITZ opponent
from the side
Defence against hook
kicks
(Opponent kicking with
lead leg). This is a very difficult kick to counter attack against,
because you cannot step to the side to avoid the kick (you will either
run into the kick, or the hook will “follow” you around)
The disadvantage of
the hook kick is that it exposes your groin to side /back kicks etc.
i.
Note:
this must be timed very well!
Run in towards the
opponent, blocking the kick with both hands in a sort of twin forearm
block -blocking the opponents foot and calf, making sure that their
kick does not “curl” around your blocking arms to reach your head.
Then as you are
running in, with your lead arm, strike with a BACKFIST, then with
other hand punch into a BLITZ attack
ii.
Competitors in
open stance
Slide back /lean back
(hands in an “unorthodox guard), so that the kick passes across the
target and with lead hand, block the kick across -so that it cannot be
rechambered to a turning kick -then launch yourself forward and BLITZ
your opponent (leading with front hand) -causing them to lose balance
and fall backwards
iii.
Competitors in
closed stance
Slide back /lean back,
and block the kick across in the direction it is moving in, and
spinning on front leg execute a REVERSE TURNING KICK -stepping down
into a BLITZ
(You could execute a
TURNING KICK with your lead leg before kicking with the REVERSE
TURNING KICK, kicking as you lean back)
Obviously, this list
is not exhaustive, it is just to give you a few techniques and some
ideas of the combinations you can put together.
Everybody
is different and will prefer different techniques, so you should
try and develop combinations that work for YOU.
